HOW WILL PEELS HELP MY SKIN?
As we age our skin cell turnover rate begins to slow down resulting in a buildup of the outer damaged skin layers and a subsequent dull looking complexion. In addition fine lines, uneven skin tone and pigmentation all contribute to making us look older than we would like.
Peels are non-invasive treatments that can greatly improve the appearance of the skin by eliminating these outer skin layers revealing glowing, luminous skin and preventing further damage by enhancing the overall health of the skin.
The goal of any peel is the removal of the skin’s outer layer of primarily dead cells ad the stimulation of collagen and elastin to tighten and firm the healthy layer beneath. This procedure can effectively diminish the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, blemishes and more with little to no trauma to healthy skin cells.
Superficial/Light Peels – are the gentlest type of peels available. They only remove the top layer of the skin (the epidermis), and can give your skin an instantly brighter, smoother and more even texture. They are great to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, mild sun damage, minor acne scarring, pigmentation and/or dry flaking skin. They are an alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acid, also known as AHAs and BHAs and include glycolic acid, mandelic acid, lactic acid and salicylic acid. It is also common to use fruit enzymes and acids from natural sources such as pumpkins, vitamin C and pineapples. The number of treatments vary from client to client depending on the condition being treated. Superficial peels don’t hurt; you may feel a slight tingling, stinging or itchy sensation and have no downtime. You can be a slightly pink afterwards and may get some mild flaking of the skin. With a this type of peel you can return back to work or go out afterwards and no one would know you have had anything done.
Medium depth peels – give more dramatic results than superficial peels. Usually a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) or Jessner Peel, they penetrate deeper in to the skin and can be used to treat sun damage, pigmentation and wrinkles. A medium peel can be used to treat any part of the body, not just the face. Unlike the superficial peel, you will feel more activity, stinging and burning. With a medium peel you will have a longer recovery period than that of a superficial peel. Your skin will start to feel very tight and start to shed in about 3-4 days post peel. Within 7-10 days your skin will look much healthier and have a beautiful glow. With ANY peel or facial you MUST wear sunscreen to prevent skin damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sunburn.
Deep peels – these peels have a much longer recovery time and require a doctor or nurse to administer them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is a peel right for me?
Our peels are customized to fit your needs . . . whether you’re looking to correct a specific concern, refresh your complexion or simply to slow down the ageing process. Our Peels vary in their intensity such as a superficial peel like Lactic to a deeper epidermal exfoliation such as our Mineral Retinol Jessner.
Do I need to prep before my peel?
Depending on the type of peel, pre-peel prep may or may not be required. Superficial and light peels generally do not require prepping but your skin specialist may recommend a basic skin care regime to optimize your results. More intense peels will require the use of skin care before and after treatment.
What can I expect after my peel?
Once a peel treatment is applied to the skin, it penetrates to the desired level and begins to stimulate and normalize the skin, regulate oil production and dimish free radical activity. After a superficial peel, you may experience micro-flaking. With deeper peels, you will undergo a layered flake that can last two to three days. Most clients will see immediate results following their peel, such as improved texture, clarity of the skin and diminished fine lines.
With different strengths and intensities, peels can target many different skin concerns. Superficial peels buff and polish for hydrated and radiant skin, while more intense peels can target more difficult concerns such as acne, pigmentation or scarring. Your bespoke treatment plan will be created for you during your initial skin analysis with our Observe Skin Camera.
What will my skin look like immediately after the treatment?
Your skin may have a pinkish glow to it, which may persist for 1-24 hours after the treatment. We recommend Lira BB Tints, which not only covers the redness but also aids in the healing process.
Will there be any downtime?
This depends on the type of peel chosen to treat your skin concerns. Due to the stem cells, peptides and antioxidants that are added into Lira Clinical Peels, downtime is reduced. You may experience peeling 24-36 hours after the treatment or you may experience a light flaking for around 2-7 days.
What if my skin doesn’t peel?
Lack of flaking or peeling is not an indication that the treatment was unsuccessful. If you do not notice actual peeling, you are still receiving all of the benefits of your treatment, such as improvement of skin tone, texture, and appearance of fine lines and hyperpigmentation. There are a number of reasons why some people may not experience peeling, such as severe sun damage, having peels regularly with short intervals between treatments, and frequent use of Rentin-A, Retinol, or AHA’s
