Emma’s Journey – September 2011

Is there a better feeling than when you well and truly know you have hit Spring? I doubt it. I look forward to that day when it hits me every year; the sweet smell of gardenias and jasmine peppering the air, the cold brutal wind transforms into a warmer softer breeze, the sun starts to shine a little brighter. It’s glorious. It also signals the start of the Spring Racing Carnival.

As part of the commentary team for Channel Nine and being the Race Wear Ambassador for David Jones, I will attend 10 big meetings for work including my favourites Caulfield Cup Day and Derby Day. Let me tell you, they are big days! Up at 4am for Today Show with trackside duties wrapping up at around 7pm with clients. That first glass of bubbly after all of that goes down very well!

Naturally, I want to look my absolute best for these days; they are some of the biggest working events on my calendar. Looking ‘race day ready’ is about looking polished and well put together, and while a gorgeous dress, incredible hat and all the right accessories will help you sparkle at the track, there are a couple of extra tricks of the trade I do to make sure I look the best I can. Manicured hands and toes are a must, while in recent years I’ve also been partial to Clover’s Oxygen Facial before these big weeks, to make sure I look fresh during those marathon days. Dependent on your outfit and skin tone, a spray tan is essential as well.

Other tips? Always put you hair up if the weather looks to be wet or windy (you’ll still look a million dollars after the storm has hit), keep your makeup natural but perhaps experiment with a bold lip colour, ensure your outfits follow those traditional rules (just above the knee, not too much skin, hats made of straw for spring) and be sure to pace yourself if you’re there for a good time! But most of all enjoy the day! Racing is a magical sport; soak up the atmosphere, take an interest in the action on the track and have fun with your friends.
