Emma’s Journey – January 2011

Emma’s Journey – January 2011

If there is one thing I will claim to be exceptional at (and believe me, this might be the only thing) it’s travelling. I have mastered the art of packing a week’s worth of clothes, including three to four pairs of shoes and those ever bursting beauty bags into a small black carry – on case – without the hosties telling me to place it underneath the plane in fear of it breaking ‘weight regulations’. I nod off to sleep on planes the moment I take my seat, even if it’s only a 55 minute flight to Sydney. Albeit I have found myself waking up from an uncomfortable nap after accidently nestling into the shoulder nooks of older men sitting next to me (I might need to work on that). I negotiate the check – in queues and security lines with precision and efficiency. I am a pro at checking into hotels quickly, and the best in the business at finding the most delectable treats stocked around my sterile home away from home. At work on the Today Show, we call checking into a hotel ‘Mini Bar Bound’, when we have to leave a location straight after the show, we call bringing our bags to a job ‘Wheels Up’ and we call ourselves ‘George Clooney’. If you have seen Up In The Air – that is my life.

However, whilst being a woman is a terrific advantage in travelling (we don’t forget things, we always pack enough underwear, we’re always prepared for the weather and ready for a cocktail party if it pops up with that party dress we safely stowed at the bottom of our bags for ‘just in case’.  It’s safe to say we suffer more in the looks department after a long few days on the road.

I don’t know about you, but after a 3 hour wait in Sydney Airport, a 14 hour flight to Johannesburg (Ok, and maybe a few pinots along the way too), 2 hours through customs and luggage collection followed by a 5 hour bus trip to a town called Nelspruit earlier this year, I looked like hell. So after much trial and error, I have come up with some tips for those who are heading on a journey for the summer months, or beyond.

Always request an isle seat. Why? Well if you are drinking all that water you need to on a plane to keep yourself hydrated you should need to make a few trips to the bathroom.

In your handbag, my top carry on items are eye drops, hand cream, the best moisturiser you can find, mints, blush (You always seem to lose the colour on your cheeks once you hit the plane), a hair tie and perfume.

- And before you leave -  there are a few Clover treatments you should invest in to make you look that little bit more like Victoria Beckham when you walk down the aerobridge, they would be: The world’s best spray tan, the Oxygen Facial, eye lash tint (No old yucky mascara bleeding down your face – WIN!) and painted toes and fingers.

 Happy travelling!
